Puran Poli: A Sweet Flat-bread From India

Puran Poli or Puran Puri is an Indian flat-bread and is eaten as a dessert in Maharashtra or as a main dish in the state of Gujarat. Other states of its origin include Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This is a very famous dish and is prepared during Holi/Gudi padwa.

This sweet flat-bread is a favorite dish of Indians and has got many variations throughout India There are different names for this flat-bread, which include Puran Poli(Marathi), Bobbatlu(Telugu), Boli(Malayalam & Tamil), Obbattu(Kannada), Poli, Ubbatti etc.

The recipe of Puran Poli varies with places. . For example Maharashtrian Puran Poli is very different from Puran Puri of Gujarat. While toor dal is used for stuffing in Gujarat, chana dal is used in Maharashtra. Grated coconut is also used sometimes in Konkan, Maharashtra. Sometimes a mixture of jaggery and sugar can be used as a sweetener. In coastal areas, nutmeg is used for flavoring and sometimes cardamom is used. Both, nutmeg and cardamom can also be used. In addition, one can add Nuts, dates etc.

Puran Puri also varies in size and thickness. The stuffing used in Gujarat is Toor Dal. Due to this, the size of Puran Puri becomes small and thickness increases. Whereas in Holige, coconut is used which results in larger size and less thickness.
